Thane shifts to EVMs with embossed Braille script

EVM
Thane, Oct 15: The assembly polls in Thane this year is user-friendly, especially for the blind. The EVMs here have information embossed in Braille, making it easier for the visually impaired.

While activists and voters have backed this move, they have asked for video assistance too for an easier and hassle-free polling. Madhavi Sardeshmukh, deputy collector of Thane said,"All the EVMs used in Thane district for this election have the information embossed on them. This is for the first time we are using them."

When a visually challenged voter arrives, he and his assistant are explained how the candidates are numbered. According to the TOI, these machines have numbers 1-15 on the ballot unit embossed in Braille. If there are more than 15 candidates, officials will put stickers after masking the existing embossed numbers.
