Terror Strikes Kashmir: Ex-Sarpanch Dead, Tourist Couple Hurt
Terror struck the serene landscapes of Kashmir on a chilling Saturday night, leaving a trail of violence just days before the Lok Sabha elections in Baramulla. In a span of less than an hour, terrorists launched two separate attacks—one targeting a tourist couple from Rajasthan in Anantnag and another claiming the life of a former sarpanch in Shopian. These incidents have cast a shadow over the electoral proceedings and have been widely condemned by political entities across Jammu and Kashmir.

The first of these attacks occurred near a popular tourist camp close to Pahalgam, where Farha, hailing from Jaipur in Rajasthan, and her spouse Tabrez were fired upon. The couple sustained injuries and were promptly evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment. The Kashmir Zone Police, through a post on X, confirmed that the area had been cordoned off as further investigations are underway.
Shortly after this incident, terrorists targeted Aijaz Sheikh, a former sarpanch associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in Hirpora, Shopian. Sheikh was rushed to the hospital following the attack but succumbed to his injuries. The loss of Sheikh has been deeply felt, with officials and political parties rallying to condemn the act of violence.
Condemnation and Calls for Peace
The back-to-back attacks have not only heightened tensions but also drawn widespread condemnation from various political quarters in Jammu and Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti, former chief minister and PDP president contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, expressed her concerns over the timing of these attacks amidst ongoing electoral campaigns. She highlighted these incidents as worrying signs against the backdrop of claims of normalcy by the Government of India.
National Conference leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah also voiced their condemnation, labeling such acts as significant barriers to achieving lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir. They called upon all communities to unite against these challenges and work towards harmony. The BJP issued a statement mourning the loss of Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh, acknowledging his bravery and commitment to the party in Jammu and Kashmir.
Security Measures and Electoral Implications
In response to these attacks, security measures have been intensified in Anantnag and Shopian, with search operations launched to apprehend the perpetrators. These incidents occur amidst active campaigning for the parliamentary polls in the Anantnag-Rajouri seat, with polling in Baramulla scheduled for May 20 as part of the fifth round of the seven-phase general elections.
The deferral of polling for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat from May 7 to May 25, initially due to concerns over weather conditions, now takes on new significance in light of these attacks. Political parties have united in their condemnation, reflecting a collective stand against violence and an affirmation towards peaceful electoral processes.
As Jammu and Kashmir stands at a critical juncture with upcoming elections amidst challenges to peace and security, these incidents underscore the complex dynamics at play. The collective response from political parties and security forces will be crucial in navigating through these turbulent times towards a hopeful future for the region.
