Terror funding: Rs 120 crore raised alone from charas smuggling

Law enforcement agencies raised concerns about the rise in charas smuggling in the Valley.

The law enforcement agencies will invoke the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against the drug syndicate in Jammu and Kashmir. The decision was taken by the Ministry for Home Affairs after security agencies raised concerns about the growing drug menace in the troubled state.

Law enforcement agencies raised concerns about the rise in charas smuggling in the Valley. They said that the proceeds were being used to fund terror. Drugs continue to be main funder of terrorism and the syndicate is largely controlled by the Dawood Ibrahim gang.

The agencies said that charas smuggling alone has raised Rs 120 crore for the syndicate.

A large part of it lands in Mumbai, the agencies also said. A probe being conducted that the syndicate operates from Pakistan. There is a handler in Anantnag who oversees the operations. The drugs are smuggled in through the border and then moved to other parts of the country either by road or sea.
