Telangana: Now degree students to face detention if scored below 50% marks
The Telangana State Council for Higher Education has decided to detain the degree students in the same year if they did not clear 50 per cent of the subjects prescribed for an academic year. The new rule will be in force from the current academic year.
New rule will be enforced as part of choice-based credit system (CBCS) introduced last year.
"As per the detention system, a first-year student who secures less than 50% marks in subjects prescribed for the first and second semester will be detained. The same shall be followed for other semesters as well," said Papi Reddy, chairman, TSCHE, said.
Earlier, students were promoted to the next year even if they secured less than 50 % marks in the semester exams.
As part of the CBCS, a student having 75 per cent attendance in the first semester is promoted to the second semester.
While academicians describe the system good as it spurs students' interest in academics apart from improving attendance, the college managements are still unsure about the implementation of the detention system.
There are 1,300 degree colleges in Telangana and the decision is expected to affect over 9 lakh students in the state.
