Extended Polling Hours in Telangana for Lok Sabha Elections Amid Heat Wave
In a significant move to accommodate voters amid the scorching heat wave in Telangana, the Election Commission (EC) has announced an extension of polling hours for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Scheduled for May 13, during the fourth phase of the seven-phase electoral process, the polls will now allow voters to cast their ballots from 7 am to 6 pm, extending the previous closing time by an hour.

This adjustment in polling times aims to ensure that the extreme temperatures, which could deter voter turnout, do not prevent citizens from exercising their democratic right. The revised timings will be uniformly applied across all assembly segments within 12 of the Lok Sabha constituencies. However, for five other parliamentary seats, the extended hours will be selectively implemented in specific assembly segments.
The constituencies benefiting from this modification include Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Zahirabad, Medak, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Chevella, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool SC, Nalgonda, and Bhongir. Additionally, certain segments within the Adilabad, Peddapalle, Warangal SC, Mahabubabad ST, and Khammam Lok Sabha seats will also see these extended polling hours.
The decision to alter the polling schedule came after the Telangana chief electoral officer proposed this change. This proposal was based on feedback from various political entities and candidates who expressed concerns over the heat wave's potential impact on voter participation. The EC's notification underscored that this measure is a direct response to these concerns, aiming to facilitate a smoother and more inclusive voting process for the electorate.
With all 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana set for election on May 13, this adjustment in polling hours reflects the EC's commitment to ensuring a fair and accessible electoral process. By accommodating the natural challenges posed by the weather, the commission hopes to encourage a higher voter turnout and ensure that every voice is heard in this crucial democratic exercise.
