Telangana Grapples with Record-Breaking Rain: Houses, Roads Submerged, Six Lives Lost

Telangana is currently facing the wrath of "record-breaking" rainfall, claiming six lives as the deluge continues to wreak havoc across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall, but the actual downpour surpassed all expectations, leading to widespread flooding and extensive damage to roads and crops.

Meteorologists attribute the unprecedented rainfall to the formation of a strong vortex, a rotating column of air created when moisture levels in the atmosphere are high. This vortex has caused a cloudburst in Mulugu and Bhupalpally districts during the early hours of Wednesday, resulting in severe flooding. The rising waters have submerged houses and blocked roads, rendering access to several villages impassable. To combat the crisis, rescue efforts have been undertaken, with hundreds of people being saved by boats and helicopters.

While the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease today, certain areas of the state continue to face critical conditions. Hyderabad, the state capital, has experienced a respite from rain since yesterday evening. However, the situation remains dire in Warangal, compelling the state government to deploy boats for search and rescue operations. The Warangal Police have already rescued 50 individuals, while over 10,000 people have been relocated to relief camps across the affected districts.

Amid the ongoing crisis, Union Tourism and Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy communicated with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the flood situation in Telangana. The Home Minister has pledged full support for rescue and relief operations, with two helicopters and five NDRF teams currently engaged in rescue missions for the stranded populace.

Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, Mumbai has been grappling with heavy rainfall over the past few days, resulting in waterlogging, traffic jams, and delays in suburban train services. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Raigad district, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Thane has been issued an orange alert, while Mumbai has been issued a yellow alert for today, predicting heavy rainfall at isolated places.

As a testament to the severity of the weather, a landslide occurred on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Kamshet tunnel on Thursday night, blocking one lane and leading to traffic congestion. Highway police personnel have been tirelessly working to clear the debris on the busy 6-lane road and restore normalcy to the region.
