Telangana Opposition Criticises Limited Paddy Bonus Decision
The opposition parties in Telangana, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have voiced strong criticism against the Congress government's recent decision to provide a bonus on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) exclusively for farmers cultivating fine quality paddy starting from the upcoming kharif season. The controversy has sparked a debate on the fulfillment of election promises and the welfare of the farming community in the state.

BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao expressed his discontent on social media, accusing the Congress of deceit by limiting the promised Rs 500 bonus to only fine variety paddy. He highlighted the struggles faced by farmers, including erratic power supply, inadequate irrigation water, and the government's failure to procure paddy before damage from unseasonal rains. Rama Rao reminded of Congress's unfulfilled promises, including annual financial assistance to farmers and agriculture workers, and a significant loan waiver.
Similarly, BJP spokesperson N.V. Subhash criticized the Congress for not extending the promised Rs 500 bonus to all paddy varieties. He questioned the rationale behind inviting former AICC president Sonia Gandhi to the Telangana state formation day celebrations, suggesting that her contribution to the statehood movement should be clarified. Subhash also recalled the BJP's historical support for Telangana's statehood, referencing L.K. Advani's 2009 promise of forming the state within 100 days if BJP came to power.
The Telangana cabinet's decision to invite Sonia Gandhi for the state formation day celebrations has been met with skepticism by opposition parties, who argue that the focus should be on addressing the pressing issues faced by the people of Telangana rather than on ceremonial gestures. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka defended the government's stance, stating that the bonus for fine rice variety is a starting point and assured that paddy procurement would be inclusive of all conditions, even if wet, with payments processed swiftly within three days.
This controversy comes at a time when Telangana's agricultural sector is grappling with challenges. The opposition's critique underscores a growing demand for transparency and accountability from the ruling Congress in fulfilling its electoral promises to the farming community. As political dynamics evolve, the focus remains on how these decisions will impact Telangana's agrarian economy and its political landscape ahead of future elections.
