Azam Khan's Wife Responds to SP MP Nadvi's Remarks on Correctional Jails
Tazeen Fatima, the spouse of the incarcerated Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, voiced her discontent with remarks made by Mohibullah Nadvi, the party's newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Rampur. Nadvi, who clinched the Rampur seat by a significant margin of nearly 90,000 votes, had earlier commented on Khan's imprisonment, suggesting that jail serves as a correctional facility. "People are sent to jail for correction... I can only pray for Azam Khan," Nadvi stated on Tuesday.

Responding to these comments, Fatima expressed her disapproval during a press interaction. She remarked, "He (Nadvi) should have not made such a statement. It shows that he has a lot of experience about going to jails." This criticism comes in the wake of the SP's decision to nominate Nadvi, a Delhi-based cleric, for the Rampur seat over Asim Raja, who is known to be close to Azam Khan. Khan is presently serving time in Sitapur jail following his conviction in multiple cases.
Additionally, Fatima herself has had a brush with the law; she was imprisoned in Rampur jail on charges related to a fake birth certificate case but was released on bail last month. The controversy over Nadvi's remarks extends beyond Fatima's criticism. Ruchi Vira, another SP candidate who emerged victorious from the Moradabad Lok Sabha seat, also took issue with Nadvi's comments.
Vira visited Azam Khan's residence on Wednesday to meet with his wife, Fatima. Post-meeting, she addressed the media, underscoring Azam Khan's dedication to the Samajwadi Party. "He (Nadvi) should understand that Azam Khan has given his sweat and blood for Samajwadi Party," Vira stated, highlighting the contributions and sacrifices Khan has made for the party over the years.
The internal discord within the Samajwadi Party surfaces at a time when Azam Khan, once a stalwart of the party, finds himself sidelined following his legal troubles. The comments by Nadvi and the subsequent backlash from Fatima and Vira underline the complexities and challenges facing the party as it navigates its path forward amidst internal disagreements and external pressures.
