Tata Motors Wins Singur Nano Plant Case, West Bengal To Pay Rs 766 Cr Compensation
Tata Motors announced on Monday that it has emerged victorious in the arbitration proceedings against the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) related to the abandoned Singur plant case involving the Nano car. The company had taken legal action due to the financial losses it incurred in its investments in the defunct car manufacturing facility in Singur.

In 2008, Tata Motors had to withdraw from the Singur plant, which was established to produce the 'Nano' car, following strong opposition led by the Trinamool Congress, then led by the opposition leader Mamata Banerjee, who alleged the forced acquisition of farmland.
Tata Motors Limited is set to receive Rs 765.78 crore along with interest. "Regarding the arbitration proceedings between Tata Motors Limited (TML) and WBIDC, we would like to inform you that the ongoing arbitration before a three-member Arbitral Tribunal has been conclusively resolved in favor of TML on October 30, 2023. The company is entitled to recover Rs 765.78 crore in addition to interest from WBIDC," the company stated in its regulatory filing.
The final tribunal award marks the conclusion of the arbitration process, according to the company.
Ratan Tata's Personal Connection to the Nano Project
Last year, Ratan Tata himself shared the heartfelt reason behind his decision to create an affordable car on Instagram. Accompanied by a photograph from the car's launch, Tata explained, "What truly inspired me and ignited my desire to produce such a vehicle was the sight of Indian families on scooters, with children squeezed between their parents, traveling to their destinations, often on slippery roads."
