Tamil Nadu poll: GK Vasan's TMC to enter alliance with AIADMK?

Chennai, April 7: Tamil Maanila Congress chief GK Vasan is said to enter a pre-poll alliance with the ruling AIADMK, media reports said.

According to reports, Vasan, who parted ways with Congress in November 2014 following differences, is likely to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, to finalise the alliance talks.

On Monday, April 4, AIADMK had released a list of 227 candidates and kept seven of 234 seats for its allies. AIADMK's announcement of seats left TMC cornered, that was hoping to get a call from Poes Garden, Jayalalithaa's official residence in Chennai.

Earlier, TMC had demanded to contest on 20 seats with its party symbol "coconut farm", but AIADMK accepted to offer only 14 seats.

Vasan-led TMC also got feelers from the DMK, but he was not too keen to forge an alliance with it, as DMK had rejected his request for a seat in the Rajya Sabha.

Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) was founded in 1996 by Vasan's father Govindasamy Karuppaiah Moopanar, but in 2001, it backed AIADMK.

In 2002, after his father's death Vasan, the former Union Shipping Minister, merged TMC with the Congress, only to revive it in 2014, following differences with the Congress.

Interestingly, Vasan has never contested polls and has always taken the Rajya Sabha route.
