Tamil Nadu: Baalu effigy burnt by DMK cadre

Mostly, panchayat-level office bearers, the cadre gathered in front of Anna's statue near the old bus stand and burnt the effigy, demanding a change in candidature of the Tanjavur Lok Sabha seat.
Bringing traffic to a grinding halt, police was rushed to the spot who dispersed the crowd and doused the fire. S N M Ubayadullah former State minister and town secretary of the party too arrived at the spot to pacify the crowd, requesting them to disperse.
Inside reports suggest that the ones who formed the agitating crowd were followers of S S Palanimanickam, former Union Minister and the current Thanjavur MP. Palanimanickam, also the district secretary of the party had contested from the constituency eight times and had won five times consecutively.
Reports of Baalu and Palanimanickam facing their backs to each other are rife ever since the former was appointed the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways as he announced trains for the area without intimating the latter who is the district secretary of the party.
Palanimanickam had also revolted the distillery unit plant, set up by T R Baalu, raising environmental pollution issues at Vadacherry village near Orathanadu.
