Tahawwur Rana Extradited To India, Lands In Delhi To Face Trial In 26/11 Case

After being extradited from the United States, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a major suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, arrived in Delhi on Thursday night. After years of persistent diplomatic and legal efforts, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced that it had successfully obtained Rana's extradition.

Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani descent, is regarded as a close friend of David Coleman Headley, a key conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, also known as Daood Gilani. Between November 23 and 29, 2008, Lashkar-e-Taiba members carried out a series of coordinated attacks that left 239 people injured and 166 people dead in several important Mumbai locations, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

On January 21, 2025, one day after Donald Trump took office for his second term as U.S. President, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Rana's last legal appeal, paving the way for his extradition. In May 2023, a U.S. district court first issued an order for Rana's extradition. In November 2024, he filed a writ of certiorari with the Supreme Court, but it was ultimately denied after he lost appeals in several lower and federal courts, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

Officials claim that Rana's ongoing legal opposition was ineffective in stopping the process because the evidence presented by Indian authorities was conclusive.

Take a Poll

The 64-year-old Rana is anticipated to be detained in Delhi's Tihar Jail's high-security ward. Officials from the prison have attested that everything has been done to safely house him. To escort Rana back to India, a multi-agency Indian team had traveled to the United States.

The only survivor of the 26/11 attack, Ajmal Amir Kasab, was put to death in 2012 at Pune's Yerawada Jail.
