Suvendu Adhikari Vows To Jail Mamata Banerjee If BJP Wins In West Bengal
In a strong political statement during a BJP membership drive in Sandeshkhali, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, declared that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in the state, they will set up a commission to investigate alleged atrocities committed in Sandeshkhali. Adhikari vowed to ensure Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chief Mamata Banerjee is jailed for her alleged role in framing women from the region.

"You (Mamata Banerjee) asked the people to forget what happened, but the people of Sandeshkhali won’t forget, and neither will I. If BJP comes to power, a commission will be set up to probe the events in Sandeshkhali. We will make sure justice is served, and we will send you to jail for lodging false cases against women," said Adhikari.
Promise of "Revenge with Interest"
Adhikari also promised "revenge with interest," emphasizing that the BJP would stay within the constitutional limits while addressing these alleged wrongdoings. His remarks were aimed at Banerjee after her recent visit to Sandeshkhali, where she urged the locals to "let bygones be bygones." This comes amidst ongoing political tensions in the area, which saw violent protests earlier in 2024 over accusations of sexual assault and land-grabbing by TMC leaders.
TMC Fires Back at Adhikari's Claims
The TMC quickly responded to Adhikari's comments. Jay Prakash Majumdar, TMC’s state vice president, dismissed the BJP leader's claims, stating that the BJP would not come to power in West Bengal for "the next 100 years." Majumdar mocked the BJP's rhetoric, pointing out the party's declining seat count in the state.
"The BJP's seats are going down. We have heard for the past few years that the BJP will come to power in West Bengal, but in reality, their numbers are dwindling," Majumdar remarked.
Sandeshkhali: A Key Issue in 2024 Elections
The Sandeshkhali issue has emerged as a central point in the political battle between the BJP and TMC. The BJP has accused the TMC of political manipulation, while Mamata Banerjee's leadership continues to face criticism, particularly over how the protests in Sandeshkhali were handled.
The BJP is determined to use the Sandeshkhali issue as a key electoral plank in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, focusing especially on the Basirhat constituency, which includes Sandeshkhali.
A Fierce Political Rivalry
With the 2024 elections fast approaching, the political rivalry between the BJP and TMC remains fierce. Both parties are gearing up for the crucial general elections, and Sandeshkhali has emerged as a significant battleground for political momentum in West Bengal. As each side fights to assert its influence, the outcome of this contest is expected to have a major impact on the political landscape of the state.
