Sushma Singh to take over as CIC

New Delhi, Dec 5: Sushma Singh has been elected the next Chief Information Commissioner and she would be succeeding Deepak Sandhu whose term would be finishing at the end of December this year.

The decision of appointing her was taken by a panel comprising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj and Kapil Sibal, the Law Minister.

A former secretary to the Government of India, she belonged to the Jharkhand cadre. She had joined the IAS in 1972. She later became the Information Officer on September 23, 2009 in the Central Information Commission. Being the senior-most information commissioner, she will be the second woman to become the CIC.

Ms Singh has also served as the Secretary to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

She was also appointed the Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and also in the Ministry for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DONER).
