'Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana': What Is This Free Electricity Scheme & How To Apply Online?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the government is launching 'Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' in order to further sustainable development and people's wellbeing.
As per the Prime Minister, this project, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month.

"From substantive subsidies, which will be given directly to people's bank accounts, to heavily concessional bank loans, the Central Government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people. All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal which will further convenience," the PM said.

How To Register For The Scheme?

- Register in the portal with the following
- Select your State
- Select your Electricity Distribution Company
- Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
- Enter Mobile Number
- Enter Email
- Please follow as per the direction from the portal
Procedure for installation of rooftop solar plant On National Portal
Step 1: Registration
Register at National Portal through the link https://solarrooftop.gov.in/. Follow the instructions given on the portal for registration.
Step 2:Apply For Rooftop Solar
After registration, login into the account and click submit application. Fill in the information required in the format and submit the application.
Step 3: Technical Feasibility Approval/TFR
The submitted application will reach directly to the concerned DISCOM for technical feasibility approval. If all the details are correct, the application will be approved. Else, the application may be rejected or returned for correction.
Upon TFR approval, sign an agreement with the selected registered vendor and proceed with the installation of the plant. The list of registered vendors is visible in the 'vendors in my area' tab in the applicant's account on the National Portal.
Step 4: Selection of vendor and plant installation
After installation of the plant, submit installation details in the National Portal and upload a photo of the applicant with the plant. These details are required for inspection and net-metering of the plant.
Step 5: Submit Installation Details
DISCOM officials will inspect the system in accordance with the technical criterion prescribed by MNRE. Upon successful inspection, net-meter would be installed by the DISCOM.
Step 6: Project commissioning status
Once the net-meter has been installed, the DISCOM official will approve the installation details on the portal and an online commissioning certificate will be generated. This certificate will be visible in the applicant's account
Step 7: Subsidy/CFA Request
After the generation of the commissioning certificate, the applicant can raise online subsidy/CFA claim request by providing the applicant's bank details along with a legible copy of the cancelled bank cheque or passbook.
If all details found correct
If all details are correct, Central Govt. subsidy/CFA would be released directly into the bank account of the applicant within 30 days of submission of CFA/subsidy claim.

Subsidy Released
Through this scheme, individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds receive benefits aimed at reducing their energy bills. Solar panels are installed on their rooftops, providing them with free energy. This initiative is designed to alleviate the financial burden on low-income citizens, empowering them to become self-sufficient and access energy without obstacles.
The primary objective of the solar rooftop subsidy scheme, implemented by the central government, is to encourage a higher adoption of solar panels on rooftops, thereby reducing the dependency on energy from the grid station. This initiative benefits not only the government and the nation as a whole but also individuals within local communities.
