Surjewala gets charge of Congress communications department

New Delhi, Mar 5: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has appointed Randeep Surjewala head of the communications department in place of Ajay Maken, who has been made chief of the party's Delhi unit.

A party release said on Thursday that Surjewala, who is a national spokesperson of the party, has been appointed in-charge of communications department till further orders.

The communications department handles the party's interactions with the media.

Surjewala, a former minister in Haryana government, has held key portfolios in cabinet including parliamentary affairs, electronics and information technology, science and technology and public works.

The names of a number of senior Congress leaders including Anand Sharma, Digvijay Singh and Jairam Ramesh were doing rounds for the post, ever since Maken was made the party chief for Delhi.
