Surat: People Search For Diamonds On Streets? Here Is The Twist

A video showing a large number of people gathering on the streets of Varachha in Surat has taken the internet by storm.

It began after rumour claiming that diamonds worth crores of rupees, belonging to a businessman, had accidentally fallen onto the streets of Varachha, a mini-market famous for its diamond trade in Surat. Soon after a large number of people were seen on the streets searching for the scattered diamonds. Some can even be seen picking up small gems from the dusty road and examining them to determine their authenticity!

However, here comes the twist in the tale when people discovered the gems collected on the streets were not original diamonds but American diamonds, commonly used in imitation jewellery and saree embellishments.

A report in The Ahmedabad Mirror revealed that the rumour of a dealer accidentally dropping their diamonds prompted an eager hunt for these precious stones, without anyone verifying its truth.

Arvind Panseria, one of those who was hunting for diamonds a diamond seeker, relayed, "I heard rumors of a lost diamond packet early in the day. Upon arriving, I saw people sweeping the roads in search of the diamonds. Some were even gathering dust from the streets with brushes. One person claimed to have found a diamond, but it was revealed to be a false one used in imitation jewellery or in saree decoration. It appears someone pulled a prank that caught everyone's attention."

Alpesh Gabani, Police Inspector at Varachha Police Station, verified to BOOM that the rumours began circulating after someone lost a bag of American diamonds on the road which caused people to start searching for the gems. Gabani also validated that this event did not relate to the problems that the diamond industry was experiencing.

Despite the incident being a brilliant hoax, it undeniably enhanced Surat's stature for inciting an extraordinary excitement that is less likely to be found in any other city.
