Surat Claims Top Spot in India's Air Quality Rankings; Jabalpur, Agra in Pursuit

Surat has emerged as the leading city in India for air quality improvements, followed by Jabalpur and Agra. The Union Environment Ministry announced the "National Clean Air City" Awards during the Swachh Vayu Survekshan 2024 event. This took place at a national workshop in Jaipur on Saturday, celebrating the "International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies."

Surat Leads Air Quality Rankings

Top Cities Recognised

Among cities with populations over 10 lakh, Surat, Jabalpur, and Agra secured the top three positions. In the category of cities with populations between three lakh and 10 lakh, Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, Amravati in Maharashtra, and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh were recognised. For cities with populations under three lakh, Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, Nalgonda in Telangana, and Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh topped the list.

Swachh Vayu Survekshan Initiative

The "Swachh Vayu Survekshan" initiative ranks cities based on their implementation of activities approved under the city action plan and air quality improvements. This initiative is part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). These awards highlight significant improvements in air quality achieved through various best practices aimed at reducing pollution.

Key Activities for Improvement

Cities were recognised for activities such as paving roads, promoting mechanical sweeping, bioremediation of legacy waste, and solid waste management. Other key activities included converting reclaimed land from dumpsites into green spaces, greenbelt development, intelligent traffic management systems, and Miyawaki afforestation.

India launched the NCAP in 2019 with an initial target to reduce particulate pollution by 20-30 per cent by 2024 using 2017 as the base year. This target was later revised to a 40 per cent reduction by 2026 using 2019-20 as the base year. The programme currently covers only 131 non-attainment cities—those which consistently failed to meet national ambient air quality standards between 2011 and 2015.

The awards were presented to cities that demonstrated significant improvements in air quality through effective implementation of these activities. The recognition aims to encourage other cities to adopt similar measures to combat air pollution effectively.

The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) is a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing air pollution across India. It focuses on implementing long-term strategies for improving air quality in non-attainment cities.

The event highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between government bodies and local authorities to achieve cleaner air. It also emphasised the need for continuous monitoring and evaluation of air quality improvement measures.

The recognition of these cities serves as a testament to their commitment to improving air quality and sets an example for other cities to follow. The awards aim to motivate more cities to adopt sustainable practices for a cleaner environment.

The workshop provided a platform for sharing best practices and innovative solutions for air quality management. It also facilitated discussions on future strategies to achieve the targets set under the NCAP.

Efforts like these are crucial for addressing the growing concerns related to air pollution and its impact on public health. The success of these initiatives depends on sustained efforts and active participation from all stakeholders involved.

The event concluded with a call to action for all cities to prioritise air quality improvement measures. It underscored the importance of collective efforts in achieving cleaner air for all citizens.

Recognising these achievements is vital for encouraging more cities to take proactive steps towards improving their air quality. The awards serve as an incentive for continuous efforts towards creating a healthier environment.

The focus remains on implementing effective strategies and monitoring progress regularly to ensure sustained improvements in air quality across India.
