Surat Deputy Mayor Faces Backlash for Piggyback Ride During Flood Visit
Photos of Surat's deputy mayor, Narendra Patil, being carried on the back of a fire official during his visit to a flood-affected area have emerged on social media. The incident occurred while Patil was inspecting flood-hit regions in Surat, which had been severely impacted by heavy rains.

The fire official, Sunil Chaudhary, explained that he assisted Patil because the BJP leader was experiencing leg pain. Chaudhary stated, "He had pain in his legs, and the area was muddy. So he used my shoulder to cross it. Surat fire officials do not hesitate when it comes to helping citizens. It is not a big issue."
Deputy Mayor's Visit to Flood-Hit Areas
Patil's visit aimed to ensure the recovery of a man's body trapped in a flooded basement. The man had drowned four days earlier, and his body was stuck in 35-foot-deep water. Fire officials had been working for days to retrieve it.
Chaudhary mentioned that divers and other fire officials were involved in the rescue operation. They used a boat and rope to pull the body out after it was found caught in an iron rod. Despite their efforts, the body remained trapped for several days.
Fire Official's Explanation
Chaudhary clarified that he carried Patil for just 2-3 feet due to the deputy mayor's discomfort from standing for long periods. He said, "The deputy mayor was standing at the scene for several hours." This assistance was provided as Patil had been on his feet for an extended time.
In the viral photos, Patil is seen wearing a white shirt, trousers, and shoes while taking a piggyback ride on Chaudhary's back. The images show them crossing a small muddy patch during their inspection.
Attempts to reach Patil for comments were unsuccessful. However, Chaudhary emphasized that helping citizens is a priority for Surat fire officials and downplayed the significance of the incident.
The deputy mayor's visit highlights the challenges faced by officials and rescue teams during flood situations. It also underscores the dedication of fire officials who assist citizens despite difficult conditions.
The images have sparked discussions on social media about the responsibilities and actions of public officials during emergencies. While some criticized the act, others defended it as necessary assistance given Patil's condition.
The incident serves as a reminder of the physical demands placed on officials during disaster management efforts. It also showcases the teamwork between different departments in ensuring public safety during crises.
Patil's efforts to oversee rescue operations reflect his commitment to addressing issues faced by flood-affected residents. The support from fire officials like Chaudhary plays a crucial role in such challenging situations.
The situation in Surat remains critical as authorities continue to manage flood-related challenges. The dedication of officials and rescue teams is vital in mitigating the impact of natural disasters on communities.
This event highlights the importance of cooperation and support among various agencies during emergencies. It also brings attention to the need for adequate resources and assistance for those involved in disaster response efforts.
The deputy mayor's actions and the fire official's assistance demonstrate the complexities of managing flood relief operations. It underscores the importance of empathy and practical support in addressing immediate needs during such crises.
