Surajkund Mela Tragedy: Police Officer Dead, Ride Collapse Leaves 13 Injured In Faridabad

Two separate accidents at the ongoing Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Haryana's Faridabad on Saturday (February 7) left at least 13 people injured and claimed the life of a police officer, casting a shadow over the popular cultural fair.

Authorities swiftly cordoned off the affected areas and launched investigations into possible safety lapses.

The incidents occurred within a short span at the crowded fairground, triggering panic among visitors and prompting an immediate emergency response from police and district officials.

'Tsunami' Swing Collapse Injures Several Visitors

The first accident took place when the 'Tsunami' amusement ride reportedly malfunctioned and collapsed while in operation, throwing several riders off balance and causing chaos at the site. According to officials, around seven to eight people sustained injuries in the incident.

Amid the panic, a police inspector-rank officer rushed to help rescue those trapped and injured. He reportedly suffered serious injuries during the rescue effort and later succumbed, officials confirmed.

Emergency teams and volunteers quickly moved the injured to nearby private hospitals for treatment. Authorities immediately sealed off the area around the ride and began examining the structure to determine the cause of the collapse.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as visitors scrambled to move away from the ride while rescue teams worked to assist the injured. Many families present at the fair were seen leaving the area following the incident.

Welcome Arch Collapse Near Gate No. 2 Adds to Chaos

Shortly after the ride accident, another mishap occurred near Gate Number 2 of the mela when a welcome arch at the entrance suddenly collapsed. At least two visitors were injured after being struck by falling debris.

Those injured were given medical assistance and shifted to hospitals. The back-to-back incidents heightened concern among visitors and organisers about safety arrangements at the fair.

Witnesses said the sudden collapse created panic as people tried to move away from the structure, fearing further damage.

Officials Rush to Site, Probe Underway

Senior district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and Police Commissioner, rushed to the fairground soon after the accidents were reported.

They supervised rescue operations and directed authorities to secure both sites for detailed inspection.

Police have cordoned off the affected areas and initiated an investigation into the safety standards of amusement rides and temporary structures installed at the venue.

Officials said technical teams will examine whether proper permissions, inspections and safety checks were conducted before the installations were opened to the public.

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, known for attracting large crowds each year, is now under scrutiny as authorities work to determine accountability and ensure visitor safety.

Visitors have been advised to remain cautious as the investigation continues and additional safety reviews are carried out across the fairground.
