Supriya Sule Secures Victory in Baramati, Overcomes Family Rivalry

In a significant political development from Pune on June 4, Nationalist Congress Party-Samajwadi Party (NCP-SP) candidate Supriya Sule has successfully managed to retain her Baramati Lok Sabha seat, surpassing her estranged cousin's challenge by a substantial margin of over 1.5 lakh votes. The electoral battle in Maharashtra's Baramati, which saw Sule pitted against her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, turned into the state's most closely watched contest.

Sule Wins Baramati, Defeats Cousins Wife

Ajit Pawar, who had previously caused a rift within the party by rebelling against his uncle and NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar last year, commands significant influence in Baramati. This internal family feud had led many to speculate about Supriya Sule's chances of securing a fourth consecutive term. However, the election results have not only reaffirmed her position but also marked a major setback for Ajit Pawar, especially after his son Parth Pawar's defeat in the 2019 general elections from the Maval constituency.

The electoral contest in Baramati was marked by intense campaigning and exchanges between members of the Pawar family. Sharad Pawar himself took an active role in canvassing for votes, while Ajit Pawar engaged with the electorate through numerous public meetings, urging them to vote as if he were the candidate.

Despite the fierce competition, Supriya Sule led in nearly all assembly segments within the constituency, except for Khadakwasla. Celebrations among NCP-SP workers began even before the official announcement of the results. Addressing reporters post-victory, Sule expressed her gratitude towards the constituents of Baramati and emphasized the importance of moving past the election period animosity. She highlighted the increased collective responsibilities and called for caution to avoid any actions that could tarnish Maharashtra's political landscape in future state elections.

Sharad Pawar also shared his thoughts on the victory, stating that he had anticipated this outcome given his six-decade-long association with Baramati. He expressed confidence in the judgment of the voters, underscoring their ability to make informed decisions regardless of whether he campaigned.

This election not only underscored the enduring legacy of the Pawar family in Maharashtra politics but also highlighted the internal dynamics and challenges within one of India's prominent political families. As Baramati looks ahead, Supriya Sule's victory serves as a testament to her political acumen and the trust reposed in her by her constituents.
