Sukhbir Badal Remembers Close Relationship Between His Father and Manmohan Singh
Sukhbir Singh Badal, a leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), reflected on the deep personal and political bond between former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Akali stalwart Parkash Singh Badal. Manmohan Singh, known for his role in India's economic reforms, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi at the age of 92.

Badal, who previously served as Punjab's deputy chief minister, praised Singh as a true democrat who rose above party lines. "With the passing away of Dr Manmohan Singh, an era of statesmanship and civilised values in public life sadly comes to a close," he remarked. Badal highlighted Singh's commitment to maintaining the prime minister's office as a non-partisan entity.
Commitment to Diversity and Federalism
Singh's tenure as Prime Minister was marked by his dedication to India's diversity. He viewed the country's religious, cultural, linguistic, and regional variety as central to its constitution and political system. Badal noted that Singh's approach to governance was inclusive and aimed at preserving national unity.
Badal also emphasised Singh's respect for minority rights. He opposed any government interference in their religious matters, viewing such actions as threats to India's federal structure. Singh believed that protecting minority interests was essential for national integrity.
Legacy of Integrity and Values
Former Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal expressed her sorrow over Singh's death, calling it a significant loss for value-based politics in India. She noted that despite declining standards in public life, Singh remained committed to democratic principles and federalism until his last breath.
"Till his very last breath, Dr Sahib remained completely untouched by the falling standards in India's public life," she stated. Harsimrat Kaur Badal also praised Singh's unwavering stance against government interference in minority religious affairs.
She described Singh's life as a testament to personal honesty and integrity. His legacy is one of steadfast adherence to democratic values and respect for India's diverse cultural fabric.
