Sudiksha Konanki Still Missing: Family Seeks Death Declaration After 11 Days of Unsuccessful Search

Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old Indian student and permanent resident of the United States, disappeared during a spring break in the Dominican Republic, sparking an exhaustive search that has yielded no findings of her whereabouts. Last seen on March 6 at the Riu Republic Resort in Punta Cana, her absence has led to a collaborative investigation between US federal law enforcement and Dominican authorities. In a bid to bring closure, her family has requested that she be declared dead, a development reported by NBC News.

Despite the mystery surrounding her disappearance, the Dominican Republic National Police confirmed receiving a letter from the Konanki family seeking a death declaration. This request comes after their daughter vanished without a trace from a beach in Punta Cana, with all search efforts proving fruitless. The case has seen significant attention from both the media and law enforcement, with various leads being pursued but no conclusive evidence found regarding her fate.

Authorities have taken substantial measures in the investigation, including interviewing Joshua Steven Riibe, the last person known to have been with Konanki. Riibe, a 22-year-old university student from Iowa, underwent extensive questioning by the Dominican Republic Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso and is expected to continue cooperating with the local prosecutor's office. Despite the scrutiny, Riibe is not considered a suspect nor accused of any misconduct.

Riibe's involvement in the case has led to heightened police scrutiny, including multiple interrogations and the confiscation of his passport, although the reasons behind this action remain unclear. Throughout this ordeal, Riibe has stayed under police watch in the Dominican Republic, even as he and his family insist on his cooperation with the investigation.

The Konanki family, in their correspondence with authorities, have expressed trust in the ongoing investigation and acknowledged that no foul play is suspected in Sudiksha's presumed death. They have also pledged to fulfill any legal requirements necessary for their request to be processed, highlighting their daughter's ambition and her aspirations to study medicine. Sudiksha's visit to Punta Cana with friends from the University of Pittsburgh, just days before her disappearance, was meant to be a simple vacation.

On the night she went missing, CCTV footage captured Sudiksha and her friends, including Riibe, at the hotel bar before heading to the beach early in the morning. Riibe recounted a distressing attempt to save Sudiksha after a wave knocked them over, leading to her struggle in the water. This account, alongside video evidence showing the group entering and later leaving the beach without Konanki, forms a key part of the investigation.

The case, treated as a missing person situation by US authorities, has not been labeled a criminal matter. The Dominican Republic officials, too, have not named any suspects in Sudiksha Konanki's disappearance.
