Sudha Murty Nominated To Rajya Sabha, PM Modi Congratulates

Noted author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu.

Congratulating her, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji's contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring.

Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our 'Nari Shakti', exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation's destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure."

The President of India nominates 12 individuals to the Upper House of Parliament, recognizing their contributions to arts, literature, sciences, and social services.

On being nominated to the Rajya Sabha, Sudha Murty says "I am happy and at the same time I feel I have been given more responsibility. It is very nice of him, he (PM Modi) appreciated my work, I want to thank him. I am happy that I will get a bigger platform to work for the poor. I don't think that I could consider myself a politician. I am a nominated Rajya Sabha member. My son-in-law's politics for his country is different and my work is different..."

Who Is Sudha Murty?
Sudha Murty, with a background in computer science and engineering, is actively involved in public health initiatives through the Gates Foundation. She has established orphanages, contributed to rural development, advocated for computer and library facilities in Karnataka government schools, and founded the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.

Renowned for her philanthropy and literary works in Kannada and English, Sudha Murty's novel 'Dollar Bahu' was adapted into a televised series by Zee TV. Her story 'Runa' inspired the Marathi film 'Pitruroon,' directed by Nitish Bhardwaj, in which Sudha Murty also acted.

She has also appeared in a Kannada film 'Prarthana.'
