Stay all proceedings relating to demonetisation, centre tells SC
A batch of petitions had also been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the government's decision.
New Delhi, Nov 17 The union government today moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on all proceedings in various high courts in connection with the demonetisation issue. After the announcement that the Rs 500 and 1,000 notes were no longer legal tender, a plethora of petitions have been filed in various High Courts seeking a stay on the decision, citing hardship.

The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the plea tomorrow. The centre stated that there is already a matter in the Supreme Court regarding the same issue and hence all proceedings ongoing before the various high courts must be stayed.
A batch of petitions had also been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the government's decision. The court while refusing to stay the decision however advised the government to take steps to ease the pain of the public which has been standing in long queues to get currency exchanged or withdraw money.
