States clueless over existence of 23 fake universities

Delhi tops the list with 66 fake colleges, while Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra also have a huge number of such institutes.

The University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education listed out 23 fake universities and 279 fake technical institutes across India. And what is more surprising is Delhi tops the list with 66 fake colleges while Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra also have a huge number of such institutes. The UGC further asked the state governments to initiate action.

According to the UGC, these colleges don't have the authority to grant degrees without its permission. If any person issues education certificates from these mentioned colleges, then it is nothing but worthless pieces of paper.

But however, the fake list has now triggered controversy across the states.

According to Bihar Higher Education Council vice chairman Kameshwar Jha, by including the name of Maithili University or Vishwavidyalaya in Darbhanga, the UGC is trying to tarnish the image of the state because no such university has never existed in Bihar for over two decades.

Whereas Raja Arabic University in Nagpur is a residential madrasa or Islamic seminary with around 240 students. But however, the head of the institute had already apologised to the UGC for naming the seminary as a university. Yet, the name has been cropped up in the list mentioned by the UGC.

Similarly, St John University in Kerala does not exist. Yet the UGC had sent reminders about this university, said an official.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey said that they have been sending notifications to the respective states regarding the fake institutes so that the students do not get trapped and duped.
