Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose Calls for Restraint from State Government and Police Following Youth Arrests

Governor CV Ananda Bose of West Bengal voiced his concerns on Friday regarding the arrest of nine youths. They were detained for allegedly chanting "we want justice" slogans related to the RG Kar hospital case outside a Durga Puja marquee on October 9. A Raj Bhavan official mentioned that the Governor stressed the need for the state government to act with restraint and appropriateness.

Governor Urges Restraint in Bengal Youth Arrests

The Governor expressed approval of the Calcutta High Court's decision to grant interim bail to these youths. He highlighted that citizens have a democratic right to protest and should not face harassment from the police. The situation in Bengal, particularly how ordinary people are being treated by law enforcement during protests, is a growing concern for him.

Governor's Intervention Amid Protests

Bose visited the site where junior doctors have been fasting since October 5. This visit was prompted by requests from some medics seeking his intervention. At Dorina Crossing near Esplanade, he listened to their grievances and promised to organise a peace meeting among stakeholders to resolve the ongoing issues swiftly.

A Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Alipore had earlier remanded the nine youths to seven days of police custody. However, Justice Shampa Sarkar later granted them interim bail after considering a petition from their relatives. The bail required each youth to provide a surety of Rs 1,000.

Call for Sensitivity and Restraint

The Governor urged both the police and administration to handle such matters with sensitivity and restraint. A Raj Bhavan official reiterated this stance, emphasising that authorities should be cautious in dealing with protestors. The Governor's involvement underscores his commitment to ensuring that citizens' rights are respected while maintaining public order.

The evolving situation in Bengal highlights the tension between law enforcement and citizens exercising their right to protest. The Governor's actions reflect his dedication to balancing these dynamics while advocating for peaceful resolutions.
