Start-ups Are Essential for India's Growth, Union Minister Jitendra Singh Emphasises Mentorship and Support

Union Minister Jitendra Singh asserts that start-ups are vital for India's growth. He stresses the importance of mentorship and support for young innovators during the India International Science Festival.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, highlighted the crucial role of start-ups in India's growth. He stressed that mentorship, alongside funding, is vital for nurturing the next wave of start-ups. This was during his interaction with entrepreneurs and students at the India International Science Festival (IISF) in Panchkula, Haryana.

During a panel discussion titled "Startup Journeys," Singh noted a significant shift in India's access to science education. Opportunities are now more accessible, enabling individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue entrepreneurship. The government's focus has moved from policy-making to creating an ecosystem that connects ideas with markets.

Innovation and Risk in Research

Singh emphasised that innovation often involves failure, and India must embrace risk in research and development (R&D) for start-ups to thrive globally. He mentioned structured platforms like the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and national missions that link start-ups with investors, industry partners, and mentors.

In a special Fireside Chat at IISF, Singh discussed India's transition from a traditional economy to one driven by innovation. He stated that India is now shaping global technology trends rather than following them. The past decade has seen a fundamental change in India's scientific mindset, policy direction, and governance approach.

India's Evolving Role in Technology

Singh pointed out that India is no longer lagging in global technological transitions. The country is taking a leadership role in emerging fields like biotechnology, nuclear innovation, regenerative sciences, and next-generation space technologies. This shift is supported by improved political backing and a clear national purpose.

The minister also spoke about the new national R&D fund launched at the festival. He described it as a transformative initiative aimed at unlocking high-risk, high-impact innovation. This fund will support research and enterprise in sectors previously inaccessible to private players, such as space and nuclear energy.

India's Talent and Economic Growth

Looking ahead, Singh identified India's talent as its greatest asset across generations. He noted that India's economic growth is now driven by science, technology, research, and innovation. The global community increasingly views India as a source of new models for governance, public service delivery, and technology-led development.

Singh concluded by stating that India has always had talent, potential, and commitment. However, what has changed is the quality of political support and clarity of national purpose. This evolution positions India as a leader in various technological fields on the global stage.
