Starlink Enters India: This State Becomes First to Get Elon Musk's Satellite Internet Services

Elon Musk's Starlink has begun its journey in India with Maharashtra becoming the first state to partner with the satellite internet provider.

The state government officially announced the collaboration on Wednesday, marking a significant advancement in India's push for digital connectivity and technological inclusion.

Maharashtra Signs LoI with Starlink

According to PTI, the Maharashtra government has entered into a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink to roll out satellite-based internet across the state. The project aims to connect government offices, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and rural communities with high-speed satellite broadband.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the first phase of deployment will focus on remote districts like Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Washim, and Dharashiv, which continue to face limited access to reliable internet services. In a post shared by the Chief Minister's Office on X, it stated, "With Starlink's cutting-edge satellite technology, Maharashtra takes a bold leap forward in bridging the last digital divide, powering education, healthcare, and connectivity in every corner of our state."

First State Collaboration with Starlink

This marks the first official partnership between any Indian state and Starlink, the satellite internet division of Elon Musk's SpaceX. CM Fadnavis described it as a "giant leap towards a future-ready Maharashtra," adding that the state will pioneer the use of satellite-powered digital infrastructure in India.

The initiative is expected to open new opportunities for students, small entrepreneurs, and administrative bodies in rural regions where traditional broadband connectivity is still out of reach.

Regulatory Process and Demonstrations

Starlink's rollout will move forward once necessary approvals are granted by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). To ensure readiness, the company conducted demonstration runs in Mumbai on October 30 and 31, showcasing its compliance with Indian security and technology standards.

Additionally, Starlink is preparing to establish nine gateway earth stations across India, including in Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow, to support nationwide coverage.

High-Speed Internet for Rural India

When fully approved, Starlink's Gen 1 satellite network could deliver broadband speeds reaching up to 600 Gbps. This capability has the potential to revolutionize connectivity across India's remotest areas, enabling access to digital education, telemedicine, and e-governance services.

Maharashtra's collaboration with Starlink signals a pivotal moment in India's digital transformation, setting the stage for other states to follow suit in leveraging satellite internet for inclusive growth.
