Srinagar Introduces Colour-Coordinated Theme-Based Polling Booths for Lok Sabha Elections
In an innovative move to enhance voter engagement and participation, Srinagar district's poll authorities have introduced 32 theme-based polling booths, each designed with unique colour coordination to reflect its specific message. This initiative aims to create a "festival-like environment" on the day of voting, with themes catering to women voters, persons with disabilities (PwD), young voters, and environmental sustainability. The vibrant and colourful message boards at these polling stations are set to make the voting experience more inclusive and participatory for the residents of Srinagar.

Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, the District Election Officer (DEO) of Srinagar, highlighted the effort to make polling stations visually appealing and message-oriented. These stations are not just about aesthetics; they are about sending a strong message on inclusivity and environmental responsibility. For instance, eight pink polling stations have been specifically established for women in various areas of Srinagar, including Hazratbal, Anchar, and Central Shalteng. These stations will be entirely managed by all-women staff, emphasizing the capability of women to handle responsibilities in any domain.
Similarly, for persons with disabilities, eight red polling stations have been set up. These are equipped with wheelchairs, ramps, braille scripts, and other facilities to ensure a smooth voting process for PwDs. The initiative also includes a 'Vote from Home' campaign under the Election Commission of India's (ECI) initiative, allowing more than 40% of PwDs to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes.
Engaging Young Voters and Promoting Environmental Sustainability
The youth have not been left behind in this inclusive voting drive. Eight polling stations painted blue are dedicated to young voters across the district, aiming to encourage their participation in the democratic process. In addition, environmental sustainability is a key theme with eight green polling stations set up to promote this cause. These stations will be plastic-free zones, and plantation activities are planned on the day of voting to underscore the importance of environmental conservation.
The Lok Sabha elections in Srinagar, scheduled for May 13, will see nearly 17.50 lakh people deciding the fate of 24 candidates. This includes over two lakh first-time voters aged between 18-20 years. The introduction of theme-based polling booths is a strategic move to not only increase voter turnout but also to educate and sensitise the electorate on critical issues such as women's empowerment, disability rights, youth engagement, and environmental sustainability.
This innovative approach by the District Election Office in Srinagar is a testament to the evolving landscape of electoral participation in India. By creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere, the authorities aim to encourage higher voter turnout and ensure that every segment of society feels represented and valued in the electoral process.
