Southern India Bolstered in Modi 3.0 Cabinet with 13 Ministers Taking Oath

In a significant reshuffle and expansion of the Union Cabinet, more than a dozen parliamentarians from the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu were inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Council of Ministers on Sunday. This move is seen as a strategic effort to strengthen the BJP's alliances and presence in these regions.

13 Southern Ministers Join Modi 3.0

The ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, saw the inclusion of notable figures such as JDS leader and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, along with BJP stalwarts Nirmala Sitharaman and Pralhad Joshi, who were part of the previous Cabinet. Union Minister of State in the preceding Modi government, Shobha Karandlaje, and former state minister V Somanna, both from the BJP, were also sworn in during the grand ceremony.

While Sitharaman, Kumaraswamy, and Joshi have been accorded Cabinet rank, Karandlaje and Somanna have been appointed as Ministers of State. Notably, Kumaraswamy's inclusion from the JDS quota highlights the NDA's outreach to the Vokkaliga community, a dominant group in Karnataka.

The BJP's coalition strategy appears to have paid dividends in Karnataka during the 18th Lok Sabha elections, securing 19 out of 28 seats with the BJP claiming 17 and JDS two. The Congress managed to win nine seats in the state.

From Andhra Pradesh, two TDP MPs - K Rammohan Naidu and Chandrasekhar Pemmasani - along with BJP's Srinivasa Varma were inducted into the Council of Ministers. Pemmasani stands out as the wealthiest minister in this assembly with assets amounting to Rs 5700 crore.

Kerala contributed Suresh Gopi, its lone BJP Lok Sabha MP, and senior party leader George Kurian to the ministerial ranks. Kurian's appointment is particularly noteworthy as it represents an attempt by the BJP to engage with the Christian community despite him not being an MP.

From Telangana, BJP leaders Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar were included in what is being referred to as Modi 3.0 government. Tamil Nadu saw L Murugan being appointed as Minister of State, marking his entry into the Union Cabinet.

This expansion not only reflects a geographical diversification but also underscores the BJP's intent to consolidate its influence across southern India by rewarding its coalition partners and recognizing regional aspirations.
