Sourav Ganguly To Join Kolkata Doctor's Rape-Murder Justice Demand Protest
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly will join junior resident doctors in Kolkata protesting the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ganguly, along with his wife Dona Ganguly, plans to show solidarity with the protesters and demand justice for the victim.
Ganguly recently changed his profile picture on social media platform X to black as a sign of mourning. Thousands have followed suit, expressing sorrow over the incident. He faced criticism for earlier comments describing the crime as a "one-off" incident but later clarified his remarks, condemning the crime and calling for severe punishment for the perpetrator.

Supreme Court's Involvement
The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, has taken up the case suo motu, criticising the West Bengal government's response and delay in filing the FIR. The court has also formed a task force to recommend safety measures for on-duty doctors and asked the CBI to file a status report on the case. The court emphasised that this crime was the "last straw" and urged for swift action to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
Ganguly's involvement adds significant weight to the protests, given his stature in Indian sports. His participation is expected to draw more attention to the issue and put additional pressure on authorities to act swiftly. The medical community hopes that this high-profile support will lead to concrete changes in safety protocols for healthcare workers.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage across India, with many calling for immediate reforms in hospital security measures. Activists argue that such crimes highlight systemic issues within healthcare institutions that need urgent addressing. The formation of a task force by the Supreme Court is seen as a positive step towards ensuring better protection for medical professionals.
Public Reaction
Public reaction has been overwhelmingly supportive of Ganguly's stance. Many believe that influential figures like him can bring about much-needed change. Social media platforms are flooded with messages of support for both Ganguly and the protesting doctors. This collective outcry aims to push authorities into taking decisive action against those responsible.
