Sonia Gandhi Discharged From Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital After Abdominal Infection Treatment

Senior Congress leader and Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on Thursday after receiving treatment for an abdominal infection. The 78-year-old leader had been admitted on June 15 and remained under close observation for four days.

Doctors treating Gandhi reported steady improvement in her condition, which led to her release. Dr. Ajay Swaroop, chairman of the hospital, confirmed, "She has been discharged and will continue to receive treatment on an outpatient basis."

According to a medical bulletin released by the hospital, Gandhi was being treated in the gastroenterology department. Senior doctors, including Dr. S. Nundy and Dr. Amitabh Yadav, confirmed that she had responded well to medication and that her infection had been successfully managed. "Her condition has improved, and she will be closely monitored as an outpatient," they stated.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Sonia Gandhi's son, arrived at the hospital to accompany her home following her discharge.

This was not the first medical visit for Gandhi this month. On June 7, she had undergone a routine check-up at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Naresh Chauhan, Principal Advisor (Media) to the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, said it was a precautionary visit due to minor health concerns.

Sonia Gandhi has a history of health-related issues over the past few years. In February this year, she was briefly admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for a stomach-related problem. That hospitalization lasted just one day and was overseen by a specialist from the hospital's gastroenterology department.

Previously, in September 2022, Gandhi had traveled to the United States for a deferred medical check-up, which had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rahul Gandhi accompanied her on that visit as well. Her absence during that period meant she missed a significant portion of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Prior to her departure, she had played a key role in implementing a major organizational reshuffle within the Congress party.

News of her U.S. medical trip was confirmed by senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, who had thanked the public for their support and well-wishes during that time.

With her current condition reported as stable, Sonia Gandhi is expected to continue her recovery from home under outpatient supervision.
