"They may make fun of the prime minister but I want them to know that the whole party is behind him," said Mrs Gandhi referring to the opposition BJP," she said.

The backing comes after her son and the vice-president of Congress Rahul Gandhi attacked the ordinance passed by the Prime Minister that overturned the Supreme Court's law on suspending politicians having criminal records.

Sonia Gandhi's expression of support, perhaps, was an attempt to save the face of the party, which is alleged to be going through a rough patch.
