SkinnyTok Trend Raises Health Alarms: Experts Warn Of Dangerous Diet Fads On Social Media

A concerning trend known as "SkinnyTok" is gaining popularity on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and YouTube. According to an NDTV report, this trend promotes extreme weight loss methods, restrictive eating, and unhealthy discipline, pushing users to harmful practices in pursuit of thinness. Experts and survivors warn that the content is dangerous, especially for vulnerable audiences.

As per the same report, influencers like Liv Schmidt have been banned from TikTok for sharing disordered eating advice, yet the trend continues to grow. Dr. Asim Cheema, an internal medicine specialist, warns that "SkinnyTok" raises five major medical concerns. These include promoting hunger as a sign of fat burning, suggesting restrictive diets like eating only once a day, and framing harmful behaviours as wellness practices rather than disordered eating.

SkinnyTok Trend Raises Health Alarms

The report added that health expert Stephen Buchwald points out that the biggest issue with "SkinnyTok" is the toxic message it sends: achieving a certain body type is just about willpower. This dismisses the impact of genetics, mental health, and socioeconomic factors, creating a culture of shame instead of support.

Nutrition expert Maria AbiHanna warns that crash diets, popular during the summer, can backfire. They trigger biological responses that make weight loss more difficult. AbiHanna advises working with your body's natural processes, rather than following harmful, restrictive diets.

As the "SkinnyTok" trend continues, experts urge caution and emphasise the importance of a balanced, healthy approach to weight management.
