Navjot Singh Sidhu had threatened to go on a fast unto death accusing the Akali government of neglecting the development projects in the Holy City.

While the fast was intervened by the BJP supremo Rajnath Singh and Punjab CM Prakash Singh Badal, the Akali Dal took a bitter revenge saying that it would no longer let the leader contest from Punjab.

Hoping that Sidhu's popularity would win him a seat in West Delhi, BJP offered him to contest from here. Moreover, the Punjabi population here is sizeable, which increase his chances of winning the election.
