Shubman Gill Likely To Miss WC Australia Match: Who Will Open Innings In His Absence?

India's prolific batsman Shubman Gill is doubtful for India's match against Australia in its opening match at the World Cup 2023 after reportedly down with high fever.

He has tested positive for dengue due to which he missed the practice session on Thursday. A final call will be taken in this regard on Friday, according to a report in PTI.

"Shubhman has had high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday and a call will be taken on his participation in opening game," PTI quoted a BCCI source privy to team developments told as saying on the condition of anonymity.

The report also claims that he could well miss a couple of games as physical recovery of dengue patients vary and it normally takes around 7-10 days to be up and match ready.

"Let's not jump the gun. If it's normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics but it's completely the medical team's call," the source said.

How Big Is This Blow For India?

Team India might face a significant setback, considering Gill's outstanding track record. Earlier this year, he showcased brilliance with a double century against New Zealand. Barring a minor dip during the West Indies tour, Gill has displayed remarkable consistency.

He was the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League 2023, accumulating 890 runs and also topped the batting charts in the recent Asia Cup with 302 runs.

In his last few innings, Gill has scored 104, 74, 27*, 121, 19, 58, and 67*. Given this context, Gill's absence from the opening match could indeed have a considerable impact on the Men in Blue.

Who Will Open In His Absence?

At Gill's absence, Ishan Kishan or KL Rahul may be considered to open. One of these open the innings with with Rohit Sharma in the crucial match Against Australia. KL Rahul is a good candidate due to his exceptional performance since his comeback during the Asia Cup.
