Shopian encounter: Army major, 3 terrorists killed

Shopian
Shopian, April 26: In a major gunbattle between the security forces and three terrorists, an Army major was killed, along with all the three terrorists. The incident took place in the Shopian district on Friday, just a day after terrorists attacked a polling party, killing a polling officer and injuring 5 others, including three security men.

Three militants were holed up in a house in Karewa Malino village, 55 kilometers from Srinagar. The militants were asked to surrender but they resorted to firing leading to the 6 hour long gun battle. Following this, the house was blown up. Major Mukund Vardharajan and sepoy Vikram
lost their lives in the operation. However, the bodies of the militants and the army jawans are yet to be recovered.

"The operation has been suspended for the night but we are maintaining a tight vigil over the cordoned area to ensure no one gets away,"an officer said. While two militants were killed initially, the last one was hiding in the house and was killed later.

Apart from the militants, 2 locals and 1 foreigner was holed up in the house.
