Shimla Rains: Schools, Colleges Shut In 6 Sub-Divisions – Details Here

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh weather warning at 6:30 AM today, predicting light to moderate rainfall across most areas of Himachal Pradesh, with intense to very intense showers expected in districts such as Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Mandi over the next three to four hours.

In addition, many parts of Chamba, Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, and Kullu are also forecasted to receive light to moderate rain.

Amid worsening weather, daily life in Shimla district has been significantly disrupted, leading to the closure of all educational institutions in six sub-divisions: Chopal, Kumarsain, Rampur, Sunni, Jubbal, and Theog. District authorities have invoked the Disaster Management Act to shut down schools, colleges, ITIs, and Anganwadis (both government and private) for August 6, prioritizing safety and the prevention of potential accidents.

In five of these sub-divisions - Chopal, Kumarsain, Rampur, Sunni, and Jubbal - the decision was taken after continuous rainfall since midnight. Similarly, Theog subdivision saw relentless overnight rain, prompting a shutdown of all educational institutions. Staff in these institutions have been instructed to comply with existing government protocols during the closure.

Sub-divisional magistrates across the state, including those in Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur, are also issuing similar closure orders depending on local rainfall conditions.

Elsewhere, the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway remains closed due to landslides and heavy rain between Mandi and Kullu, further straining movement and logistics.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the ongoing monsoon season from June 20 to August 5, 2025, has resulted in 194 deaths and a cumulative economic loss of Rs 1,85,251.98 lakh. Of these fatalities, 108 were directly linked to rain-related incidents, as noted in the SDMA's "Cumulative Statement Showing Damage During Monsoon Season-2025."

The report underscores the severe human and infrastructural impact the monsoon has had across Himachal Pradesh this year.
