Himachal’s White Christmas: Shimla And Manali Shine Amid Snowfall Chaos - WATCH
Shimla and Manali, two of Himachal Pradesh's most popular tourist destinations, have turned into picturesque winter wonderlands with fresh snowfall, making this Christmas a truly 'white' celebration.
However, while the snowfall brings festive cheer, it has also caused disruptions, including road closures and fatal accidents.

Tourist Delight and Snow-Covered Landscapes
The enchanting snowfall across Himachal Pradesh and parts of Jammu and Kashmir has drawn a surge of tourists eager to experience the magic of a snow-clad Christmas. Social media platforms are flooded with breathtaking images of Shimla and Manali, where blankets of snow have transformed the towns into serene, white retreats.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more snowfall and rain in isolated areas, with Shimla likely to witness intensified weather conditions from Friday evening to Sunday.
Road Closures and Safety Concerns
While tourists revel in the scenic beauty, the snowfall has brought its challenges. Over 223 roads, including three national highways, have been shut down due to the snow, according to state authorities. Key highways, such as those connecting Attari to Leh, and critical routes in Kullu, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts, have been affected. Shimla faced the most road closures with 145 routes blocked, followed by Kullu (25) and Mandi (20).
To address the situation, authorities have deployed 268 machines, including two snow blowers, for snow clearance. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh assured the public that the department is prepared to handle the tourist influx and ensure safety.
Tourist Rescue Operations
In Manali, heavy snowfall stranded hundreds of vehicles near the Atal Tunnel. State officials, led by Additional Chief Secretary Onkar Sharma, confirmed that rescue operations successfully assisted the stranded tourists by late Monday night. Sharma urged visitors to follow district advisories, listen to locals, and avoid driving on snow-covered roads.
Fatal Accidents and Power Outages
Tragically, four individuals lost their lives within 24 hours due to vehicle skidding incidents, and many others sustained injuries. Additionally, snowfall caused power disruptions in several areas, with 356 transformers rendered non-functional.
Kashmir's Frozen Paradise
The higher reaches of Kashmir also experienced fresh snowfall, with temperatures plummeting to extreme lows. Srinagar recorded a bone-chilling minus 6.6°C, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg reported minus 7.8°C and minus 7.4°C, respectively. Konibal, a small village in the Pampore region, reported the coldest temperature at minus 8°C.
Water supply lines froze, and a thin layer of ice formed on water bodies as the region braced for further drops in temperature. The Met department forecasts a two to three-degree dip in the coming days as Kashmir endures the 'Chillai-Kalan'—the harshest phase of winter.
Increased Tourism and Hotel Bookings
Despite the challenges, the tourism industry is thriving. Shimla’s hotel occupancy rates exceeded 70%, with a 30% surge in bookings following the snowfall. MK Seth, president of the Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders' Association, expressed optimism about the influx of visitors.
As Shimla and Manali continue to attract tourists, the allure of a white Christmas comes with both joy and caution. Authorities remain on high alert to manage safety concerns and ensure smooth operations for visitors amidst the picturesque snow-covered landscapes.
