Shillong to Leverage Tourism Potential of Heritage Sites
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced plans to leverage the tourism potential of heritage sites in Shillong and other parts of the state. He also announced plans to open a small museum in a portion of the historic old Assembly building in the capital city.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized the importance of promoting the tourism potential of heritage sites in Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. He mentioned plans to open a small museum in a portion of the historic old Assembly building in the capital city.
Promoting Heritage Sites for Tourism

In response to a query during the 11th International Tourism Mart in Shillong, Sangma highlighted the need for a generic policy to promote heritage sites for tourism. He emphasized the importance of bringing together different stakeholders and connecting various aspects to develop a comprehensive strategy.
Shillong's Historical Significance
Shillong, once the capital of undivided Assam, is known as the "Scotland of the East" and is renowned for its historical significance and natural beauty. The three-day International Tourism Mart aims to showcase the tourism potential of the northeast, with a particular focus on Meghalaya as the host state.
Old Assembly Building as a Heritage Site
The old Assembly building in Shillong, which was built during the British era, holds significant historical value. Despite being partially burnt down around 20 years ago, the site has been left untouched. Sangma mentioned that once the new assembly building is inaugurated in September 2024, plans are in place to establish a small museum or heritage site in a section of the old building.
Balancing Tourism and Environment Protection
When asked about the state's strategy to balance tourism-related development with environmental protection, Sangma highlighted the focus on sustainable tourism and ecotourism. The government aims to create policies that avoid putting excessive pressure on specific tourist sites.
By leveraging the tourism potential of heritage sites like the old Assembly building, Raj Bhavan, and Rabindranath Tagore's house, Meghalaya aims to attract visitors while preserving its rich history and natural beauty. The state's commitment to sustainable tourism and ecotourism ensures responsible development that minimizes the impact on the environment.
