Shibu Soren Death News: Shibu Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and co-founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away on August 4, 2025. He was 81 years old and had been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month due to a kidney-related issue. His son, Hemant Soren, who is the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, announced his father's death on social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital to pay his respects to Shibu Soren. Modi also met with Hemant Soren during his visit. The Prime Minister expressed his condolences on social media, stating that Shibu Soren was a grassroots leader dedicated to empowering tribal communities and the underprivileged.

Tributes from Political Leaders

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma described Shibu Soren as a "revered leader and dedicated statesman" who served with unwavering commitment. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted Soren's role in transforming Adivasi assertion into a political force that led to Jharkhand's statehood.

CPI General Secretary D. Raja remembered Shibu Soren for his collaboration with CPI leader Binod Bihari Mahto in fighting for tribal rights. Raja noted that Soren's contributions to the democratic assertion of Adivasis would be remembered with respect.

State Mourning Declared

The Jharkhand Government declared three days of state mourning from August 4 to August 6, 2025. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in places where it is regularly hoisted, and no state functions will be organised. State government offices will remain closed on August 4 and August 5.

President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, acknowledging Shibu Soren's emphasis on people's welfare, especially tribal communities. She noted his contributions as Chief Minister of Jharkhand and as a Union Minister and Member of Parliament.

A Legacy of Tribal Advocacy

Home Minister Amit Shah praised Shibu Soren for his simple personality and humble nature, which helped him connect with the masses. Shah acknowledged Soren's decades-long struggle for tribal rights and empowerment in Jharkhand.

Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar called Shibu Soren a powerful voice for tribal identity and rights. He emphasised that Soren's contribution to politics would remain unforgettable.

A Life Dedicated to Social Justice

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, remembered Shibu Soren as a strong advocate for tribal rights. Gandhi highlighted Soren's role in the formation of Jharkhand and extended condolences to Hemant Soren and the entire family.

Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress, expressed sadness over Shibu Soren's passing. Kharge noted that Soren dedicated his life to advocating for a separate Jharkhand state and preserving tribal culture.

A Towering Figure in Indian Politics

Lalu Prasad Yadav shared his grief over losing a friend and colleague in politics. He stated that Shibu Soren's demise is an irreparable loss for politics in Jharkhand.

Naveen Patnaik, President of Biju Janata Dal, hailed Shibu Soren as a prominent leader dedicated to fighting for marginalised people's rights. Patnaik offered thoughts and prayers for the bereaved family during this difficult time.

An Inspirational Leader

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh described Shibu Soren as pivotal in creating Jharkhand 25 years ago. Ramesh praised him as a legend whose passion for social and economic justice was inspirational.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recalled his long acquaintance with Shibu Soren, recognising him as one who remained connected to land and people throughout his life.

A Champion for Tribal Rights

Shibu Soren was born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village of today's Ramgarh district in Jharkhand. He raised his voice against exploitative money lending practices prevalent at that time. In 1972, he formed JMM alongside Binod Bihari Mahto; later becoming its president after Nirmal Mahto's death in 1987.

Suffering from kidney-related ailments compounded by a stroke one-and-a-half months ago necessitated life support measures at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital where he ultimately passed away on Monday morning according to sources close by confirming earlier reports about ventilator dependency since late June when admitted initially following transfer from Ranchi city hospital facilities nearby then onwards till now finally concluding his life journey today.
