Shashi Tharoor’s Cryptic Post Fuels Congress Rift Speculation Amid Party Criticism
Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has once again found himself at the center of controversy after sharing a cryptic post on X, hinting at internal differences within the Congress party. Amid growing speculation about a rift, Tharoor posted a quote from English poet Thomas Gray's Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, stating, "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."
Congress Criticism Over Tharoor's Praise for CPI(M) and PM Modi
Tharoor has been under fire from Kerala Congress leaders for his recent remarks praising certain policies of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led CPI(M) government in Kerala, as well as his stance on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States. Party leaders see this as a deviation from the Congress's official position, fueling tensions ahead of the upcoming local body elections.

Defending his statements, Tharoor clarified that his praise for PM Modi's US visit was based on India's global interests rather than party politics. He pointed out that "we cannot always speak only in terms of party interest" and highlighted how Modi's meeting with former US President Donald Trump soon after he took office underscored India's growing diplomatic significance.
Tharoor Applauds Kerala's Startup Growth
Following his remarks on Modi's US visit, Tharoor further stirred controversy by acknowledging the entrepreneurial progress in Kerala under the CPI(M)-led government. In an article, he lauded the state's startup ecosystem, recognizing the Kerala Startup Mission and the Startup Village, which he credited as foundational initiatives that transformed the state's industrial landscape.
Tharoor was quick to clarify that these achievements were initiated by former Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and later continued by the current administration. "As a Congress worker, I take pride in acknowledging that it was Oommen Chandy who laid the foundation for this transformation," he wrote in Malayalam. His nuanced stance did little to calm party tensions.
Congress Party's Response: Veekshanam's Editorial Takes a Dig at Tharoor
The issue escalated after Veekshanam Daily, the Congress party's mouthpiece in Kerala, published an editorial indirectly criticizing Tharoor without mentioning his name. The article warned leaders against "betraying the expectations of thousands of party workers" and accused certain individuals of trying to downplay the anti-incumbency wave in the state.
The editorial's sharp language underscored the growing dissatisfaction within the Kerala Congress over Tharoor's independent stance. Many in the party feel that his statements are weakening their electoral narrative against the CPI(M) ahead of key elections.
Tharoor's Social Media Controversy: Poster Withdrawal Sparks Debate
In a further twist, Tharoor found himself in another controversy after sharing a politically sensitive poster on Facebook. The poster, reportedly from the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), referred to CPI(M) members as "cannibals", about the murder of Youth Congress workers Kripesh and Sarathlal in Periya, Kasaragod, five years ago.
But after receiving criticism, Tharoor quickly took down the post and then reposted it without the contentious mention of CPI(M). This action was interpreted as an effort to acknowledge the victims while separating himself from combative political language.
Growing Rift Between Shashi Tharoor and Kerala Congress
With tensions escalating, many Congress leaders in Kerala are reportedly unhappy with the prominence given to Tharoor within the national leadership. His independent stance on key political issues and reluctance to strictly toe the party line has fueled speculation about his future within Congress.
As internal disagreements play out in public, Tharoor's latest cryptic post has only deepened speculation about his standing within the party. Whether this rift will impact his political future remains to be seen, but for now, Tharoor continues to navigate a delicate balancing act between his party's expectations and his political ideology.
