Opinion: Congress’ Adani Obsession – A Widening Rift in the INDIA Bloc
The Congress party's singular focus on the Adani issue in the Parliament is increasingly isolating it within the INDIA bloc.
The latest blow came from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction led by Sharad Pawar, whose MP Amol Kolhe called for prioritising debates on farmers and youth over the alleged nexus between industrialists and political leaders.

The message was unmistakable: the Congress needs to rethink its strategy if it hopes to maintain unity within the opposition alliance.
This is not the first time the Congress has faced resistance from its allies over its relentless pursuit of the Adani issue. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been vocal about its belief that the opposition should focus on more pressing concerns like unemployment, inflation and public welfare.
Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders, too, have distanced themselves, quietly refusing to participate in the Congress-led protests in Parliament. Now, with the NCP joining the chorus, the cracks in the INDIA bloc are hard to ignore.
Congress' strategy has drawn criticism not just from allies but also within its ranks. Some Congress MPs argue that an overemphasis on the Adani case is costing the party valuable opportunities to challenge the government on bread-and-butter issues like inflation and unemployment. This internal dissent underscores a growing divide between the party's leadership in the Rajya Sabha and its Lok Sabha MPs, many of whom feel sidelined in strategic decision-making.
Adding to the complexity is Sharad Pawar's nuanced stance on Adani. In April 2023, Pawar openly questioned the motives behind the allegations against the industrialist, suggesting that the group was being unfairly targeted. His recent distancing from the Congress' position highlights his pragmatism and his understanding of the political stakes involved.
The Congress, meanwhile, risks looking increasingly isolated as its allies redirect focus to issues with broader public resonance. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee's recent criticism of Congress for contributing to Parliament's disruption alongside the BJP encapsulates the growing frustration among INDIA bloc members.
The Bottom Line
The fallout is evident. The Congress' insistence on the Adani issue has not only strained its relationships with allies but also diverted attention from other pressing concerns. The broader opposition consensus is clear: public interest issues like inflation, unemployment and farmer welfare should dominate the narrative, not an obsession with corporate scandals.
As Parliament's functioning hangs in the balance, the Congress must decide whether it will continue its lone crusade or recalibrate its strategy to align with its allies and the electorate's priorities.
