Sharad Pawar Condemns Centres CAA Notification Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls

NCP president Sharad Pawar criticized the Centres decision to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) just before the Lok Sabha elections, calling it an assault on parliamentary democracy.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar strongly condemned the Central government's decision to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Pawar asserted that the move, coming just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, constitutes an assault on parliamentary democracy.

Sharad Pawars Fiery Response to CAA Notification: Attack on Democracy

CAA Implementation Begins

The Central government announced the implementation of the CAA 2019, four years after its contentious passage in Parliament. This law paves the way for granting citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Consequently, the government will commence the process of granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from these three countries.

Pawar's Criticism

Addressing reporters in Mumbai, Pawar vehemently criticized the Centre for issuing the CAA notification just before the anticipated announcement of the Lok Sabha poll schedule, likely to take place in April-May. He emphasized that such a decision, made days ahead of the Election Commission of India's (ECI) announcement, represents an attack on parliamentary democracy. The former Union minister expressed strong condemnation of this action.

NCP's Perspective

The NCP, a prominent opposition party, expressed a separate view on the CAA decision. Clyde Crasto, the national spokesperson for the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, asserted that the CAA notification serves as a diversionary tactic to divert public attention from the controversy surrounding electoral bonds.

Supreme Court's Order on Electoral Bonds

Earlier on the same day, the Supreme Court dismissed the State Bank of India's request for an extension and directed it to disclose details of electoral bonds to the Election Commission by the end of business hours on March 12. A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, also instructed the EC to publish these details on March 15.

Shiv Sena's Viewpoint

Sanjay Raut, Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), offered his perspective on the CAA implementation. He suggested that the ruling dispensation recognizes the absence of a supportive wave ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and is attempting to generate one by issuing the CAA notification. Raut further alleged that the government resorts to polarizing tactics, such as Hindu-Muslim issues, to garner support.

Raut's Prediction

Raut expressed his belief that despite the Union government's efforts to create communal tensions or other forms of unrest, Narendra Modi will not secure another term as Prime Minister.

Conclusion

The CAA notification has sparked strong reactions from various political parties and leaders, with concerns raised about its timing and potential impact on parliamentary democracy. As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, the political landscape in India continues to evolve, with parties strategizing to secure public support and gain electoral success.
