Sharad Pawar Respects Protocol with Nephew Ajit at Official Event

NCP SP chief Sharad Pawar stood up when he encountered his estranged nephew, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, at an official meeting on Saturday. The meeting was part of the District Planning and Development Council (DPDC) in which Sharad Pawar participated as a Rajya Sabha member.

Pawars Protocol Gesture at Meeting

As soon as Ajit Pawar, who was to chair the meeting as the district's guardian minister, entered, the senior Pawar rose to his feet like other participants. Supriya Sule, Baramati MP and Sharad Pawar's daughter, explained that her father followed protocol by standing up. She mentioned this during her party's rally in Pimpri Chinchwad later that evening.

Protocol and Dispute Over Fund Disbursal

During the DPDC meeting, Sharad Pawar inquired about the tehsil-wise distribution of development funds. The collector responded that he would provide the necessary information. However, Ajit Pawar cited a Government Resolution (GR) order, stating that MPs and MLAs could not ask questions about fund disbursal or vote during these meetings as they are only invitees.

Sule claimed that this GR allows invitees to ask questions and express their views in DPDC meetings. "We can ask questions," she added. She accused the ruling party of attempting to suppress dissenting voices and spreading a fake narrative.

Allegations of Constitutional Changes

Sule further alleged that a BJP MP had stated that the Constitution would be changed if his party secured more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha. "This was no fake narrative," she asserted. Sule emphasised that the government wants to bring dictatorship and change the Constitution.

Ajit Pawar led a rebellion against his uncle last year and joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra. Despite this political rift, Sharad Pawar's adherence to protocol by standing up was highlighted by Sule as an example for all political workers to follow.

The incident at the DPDC meeting underscores ongoing tensions within the NCP and between its members and the ruling coalition in Maharashtra. The disagreement over fund disbursal protocols reflects deeper political conflicts and differing interpretations of governance rules.

The government's stance on limiting MPs' and MLAs' roles in such meetings has been criticised by opposition leaders like Sule, who view it as an attempt to curb democratic processes. This controversy adds to the broader debate on governance and constitutional integrity in India.

The rally in Pimpri Chinchwad served as a platform for Sule to voice these concerns and rally support against what she perceives as undemocratic practices by the ruling party. Her statements highlight ongoing political struggles and the importance of maintaining democratic norms.

The interaction between Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar at the DPDC meeting is emblematic of larger political dynamics in Maharashtra. It reflects both personal and ideological divides within parties and their impact on governance.

This event also illustrates how procedural actions, like standing up in a meeting, can carry significant political symbolism. It shows respect for protocol while simultaneously highlighting underlying tensions and conflicts.

The ongoing debate over constitutional changes and governance practices will likely continue to shape political discourse in Maharashtra and beyond. Leaders like Sule are positioning themselves as defenders of democratic principles amid these challenges.
