Sharad Pawar Slams PM Modis Guarantees Amid Farmers Suicides
Sharad Pawar, founder of the Nationalist Congress Party, expressed concern over the state of farmers in India. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modis promises to farmers, contrasting them with the reality of rising debt and suicides among cultivators. Pawar emphasized the need for addressing the challenges faced by farmers, including low prices for their produce and high input costs.

Pune, February 21: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar drew attention to the contrasting realities faced by farmers in India. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi offers various guarantees to the agricultural community, cultivators continue to grapple with mounting debt and even resort to suicide.
Grim Picture of the Farm Sector
Addressing NCP workers at a conclave in Manchar, Ambegaon tehsil, Pawar, a former Union agriculture minister, painted a grim picture of the farm sector. He emphasized the hardships endured by farmers, who toil tirelessly but fail to receive remunerative prices for their produce. The high input costs and low output result in debt-ridden farmers, leading to extreme measures.
Advertisements vs. Reality
Pawar highlighted the irony of the situation, pointing out that newspapers and television channels are filled with advertisements featuring PM Modi offering guarantees to farmers, such as good prices and markets for their produce. However, despite these promises, farmers continue to face dire circumstances, with some even taking their own lives.
Criticism of Current Leaders
Pawar also directed criticism towards leaders like Dilip Walse Patil, a former confidant who joined the rebel NCP MLAs. He lamented the lack of loyalty among present-day leaders, contrasting them with earlier generations who remained steadfast in their party's ideology. Pawar questioned how such leaders could be expected to show loyalty to their voters if they failed to demonstrate it towards their own party.
Political Dynamics in Maharashtra
Walse Patil is a prominent member of the NCP led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who joined the Shinde government in July 2022. Pawar's remarks reflect the complex political dynamics within Maharashtra, where allegiances and alliances have shifted in recent times.
Sharad Pawar's statements underscore the urgent need to address the challenges faced by farmers in India. Despite government assurances, the agricultural community continues to suffer, highlighting the gap between promises and reality. As the nation grapples with these issues, the plight of farmers remains a critical concern that demands immediate attention and effective solutions.
