Shahi Imam of Delhis Jama Masjid Announces Son as Successor
In a historic ceremony steeped in tradition, the Shahi Imam of Delhis Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, has appointed his son, Syed Shaban Bukhari, as his successor. The dastarbandi investiture, held within the grand mosques courtyard, marks the continuation of a 400-year-old tradition.
In a significant development, the incumbent Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, has declared his son, Syed Shaban Bukhari, as his successor. The announcement was made during a dastarbandi investiture ceremony held in the courtyard of the grand mosque on Sunday, February 25.

Tracing the Lineage of Shahi Imams
In his address before the formal declaration, Bukhari delved into the rich history of the Jama Masjid. He highlighted that the tradition of appointing Shahi Imams dates back to the Mughal era, with the first Shahi Imam being appointed by Emperor Shah Jehan. Bukhari mentioned that the first Imam of Jama Masjid, Hazrat Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari, was appointed as the Shahi Imam at the age of 63.
Tradition of Successor Declaration
Bukhari emphasized the significance of the tradition of Imams declaring their successors during their lifetimes. He stated that this practice has been followed for over 400 years, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership within the Jama Masjid. In accordance with this tradition, Bukhari declared Syed Shaban Bukhari as his successor in the presence of Islamic scholars and dignitaries gathered for the occasion.
Dastarbandi Ceremony and Future Role
Following the announcement, the traditional dastarbandi turban-tying ceremony was performed on Syed Shaban Bukhari's head, symbolizing his investiture as the Naib Imam of the mosque. It was previously announced in November 2014 that Syed Shaban Bukhari would serve as the 14th Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid in the event of Syed Ahmed Bukhari's death or ill-health.
Mughal-Era Grandeur and Celebration
The ceremony, held at the magnificent Mughal-era mosque built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, lasted for over an hour. Several ulemas (Islamic scholars) attended the event, and the mosque, a prominent landmark and symbol of old Delhi, was adorned with congratulatory posters featuring images of the Shahi Imam and his son.
Lineage and Succession
Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the 13th Imam in the line of descent, is the son of Syed Abdullah Bukhari, the 12th Shahi Imam, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 87. Bukhari succeeded his father as the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid in October 2000.
The dastarbandi ceremony marks a significant moment in the history of the Jama Masjid, ensuring the continuation of a centuries-old tradition of leadership succession. Syed Shaban Bukhari's appointment as the Naib Imam and future Shahi Imam reflects the commitment to preserving the rich heritage and spiritual significance of this iconic mosque.
