SGPC Calls Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency' Film 'Anti-Sikh', Seeks Nationwide Ban
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called for a ban on Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film 'Emergency', accusing it of misrepresenting historical figures and events. Kangana plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the movie.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has criticized the film for depicting Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, honored as a community martyr by Akal Takht Sahib, in a negative light. Dhami has urged the government to take legal action against Kangana for allegedly inciting religious sentiments among Sikhs.

Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the son of Indira Gandhi's assassin Beant Singh, has also called for a ban, alleging that Sikhs are portrayed unfairly. Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has demanded that SGPC review the film before its global release, stressing that the Shiromani Akali Dal, led by Parkash Singh Badal, played a significant role during the Emergency period. She suggested that Kangana's past derogatory remarks about Punjabis might influence the film's portrayal of Sikhs.
Amritsar Harsimrat said, "I haven't seen the film, but if any party fought the biggest struggle during the 'Emergency', it was the Shiromani Akali Dal. The late Parkash Singh Badal was the first to lead the movement and get arrested along with others."
"The Akali Dal fought the hardest throughout the Emergency and faced numerous arrests. If Sikhs are not portrayed correctly in the film, it could be because Kangana's role does not allow for a fair depiction of Sikhs. History shows Kangana has used derogatory language against Punjabis, especially during the farmers' protests, which indicates her bias," she added.
The movie is based on the Emergency period imposed by Indira Gandhi. Directed and starred by Kangana, the film also features Shreyas Talpade, Anupam Kher, and Milind Soman. Kangana's last film was Tejas.
