Severe Heatwave Pushes India’s Peak Power Demand to Record 270.82 GW

India's electricity demand has surged to record levels over the past four days as intense heatwave conditions continue to affect several parts of the country. According to the Ministry of Power, daytime peak electricity demand has broken previous records continuously between May 18 and May 21.

In a statement shared by the Ministry of Power, the government said rising temperatures and increased use of cooling appliances have significantly pushed up electricity consumption across India.

The ministry released the following peak daytime electricity demand figures recorded over the last four days:

May 18 - 257.37 GW
May 19 - 260.45 GW
May 20 - 265.44 GW
May 21 - 270.82 GW

The latest figure of 270.82 GW recorded on May 21 marks the highest daytime peak electricity demand during the current summer season so far.

Officials noted that peak daytime demand generally occurs between 2 pm and 4 pm, when temperatures are at their highest and usage of air conditioners, coolers and fans increases sharply.

Despite the surge in demand, the Ministry of Power said the country's electricity supply system remains prepared to meet requirements. However, authorities have urged citizens to use electricity carefully and avoid unnecessary consumption during peak hours.

"Although we are prepared to supply electricity as required, due to the intense summer, let us all try to use electricity wisely and judiciously," the ministry said.

India typically witnesses a sharp rise in power demand during extreme summer conditions, especially in northern, western and central states experiencing prolonged heatwave spells. Increased electricity consumption during such periods also puts pressure on power grids, coal supplies and transmission infrastructure.

The latest data comes as several states continue to report above-normal temperatures, with weather agencies warning that heatwave conditions may persist in many regions over the coming days.
